Why More Families Are Choosing Professionally Trained Dogs

Recently, we were asked to make a media appearance with the BBC to discuss what may be contributing to the recent rise in dog attacks on both people and other dogs, and what role breeding choices and the COVID era may have played in this increase in behavioural issues.

It’s a conversation we feel passionately about.

Over the last few years, demand for puppies exploded. During COVID especially, many people bought dogs without access to proper support, training, socialisation opportunities, or guidance on selecting the right breed and temperament for their lifestyle. At the same time, inexperienced breeding became more common, with appearance and availability often prioritised over health, stability and temperament.

The reality is that finding a suitable puppy today is incredibly difficult.

When we look for puppies for our own programmes, we are not simply choosing a “cute puppy.” We are looking at generations of breeding, correct health testing, stable and confident temperaments, drive levels, environmental suitability and whether the dog is likely to thrive in the lifestyle it is intended for.

A high-energy working-line dog may look beautiful, but could be completely unsuitable for a busy family home. Likewise, a nervous or genetically unstable temperament can create huge challenges later in life, no matter how much training is put in afterwards.

Choosing a puppy without knowledge of bloodlines, temperament traits, breed characteristics and environmental suitability is incredibly hard. Of course, you can strike lucky — many people do — but if you are able to get professional help when selecting a dog, it can be one of the best investments you make.

After all, you will hopefully have your dog for 12+ years.

Having a companion you can genuinely enjoy living with, trust around your children, confidently take out in public and relax with at home is everything.

This is exactly why we created our trained dogs for sale programme.

Through The Trained Dog Company, we carefully source puppies we believe are best suited for family life, trainability, health and temperament. Those dogs are then raised and trained within our proven structure and programme before joining their new homes at around 6–8 months of age.

Our goal is simple: to bridge the gap between choosing the right dog and knowing how to raise it correctly.

The dogs learn real-world neutrality, lead walking, recall foundations, household manners, engagement, confidence and calmness around everyday life before they ever move into their forever homes.

For many families, professionals, first-time owners or people who simply want the right start, it can completely change the experience of dog ownership.
